Lying between the peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, the Arusha National Park, is a small but beautiful park located 32kms from Arusha town.
Described as ‘a gem amongst parks’ for its beauty and remarkable diversity of wildlife and habitat, the Park’s spectacular features include the shallow alkaline Momella Lakes, famous for their birdlife, both resident and migratory, especially the flamingoes; the Ngurdoto Crater, a 3km-wide unbroken caldera, whose wildlife presence has earned it a nickname – ‘Little Ngorongoro’ and dominating the Park is Mt. Meru, at 4,566m it is Tanzania’s second highest mountain and the fifth highest mountain in Africa.
The forest contains a wealth of birds and wildlife including buffaloes, elephants, hippos, giraffes, warthogs, wide range of antelopes, zebras and the striking black and white colobus and blue monkeys climbing along their branches. Leopards and hyenas are rarely seen and lions are absent altogether from the Park.
More than 400 species of bird, both migrant and resident, including huge migratory fowls, grebes, African pochards, Egyptian geese and a variety of herons and egrets, crowned hawk-eagles can be found in Park alongside with a wide variety of butterflies.
