Situated on the north side of Mount Meru, not far from the irrigated fields of Ngarenanyuki and the Momela gate of Arusha National Park, Mkuru is easily recognizable from a distance because of the pyramid shaped Oldonyo Landaree mountain.

A Maasai dominated region, there are traditional bomas scattered throughout and one gets to see the Maasai way of life.

Since the introduction of camels in Tanzania since the early 90’s, Mkuru has become a centre for camel promotion, with over a hundred camels in the camel camp.

A visit to Mkuru includes:

  • A visit to the camel camp at the foot of Mount Meru
  • A thorough explanation of the way camels are kept in the semi-arid plains
  • Camel safaris varying in length from half a day to one week
  • Bird watching walks through the plains
  • A climb up Oldonyo Landaree
  • A view into the culture and daily life of the Maasai
  • A cup of fresh camel milk

Tours on offer:

Camel Camp Experience
At the camel camp, walk between the camels and watch their ways. At night, relax by a campfire under the stars and listen to the sounds of the plains. In the morning, you can see the Maasai milking the camels and you  may enjoy a cup of fresh camel milk.

Camel Ride
From the camel camp, take a camel ride through the plains. Guided by Maasai warriors, view game and birds in the area. Mt. Meru, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Longido Mountain add to the beauty of the scenery.

Camel Safaris
Starting from the camp, safaris can be made to Kilimanjaro, Longido Mountain and Lake Natron. A two-day tour of Mt. Kilimanjaro passing through the wildlife corridor between Amboseli National Park and Tarangire and Arusha National Park can be organized. A three day safari takes you to Longido Mountain, while a four day safari is enough time to make it to the mountain of Kitumbeine. For more adventurous, a seven day safari can be organized via the mountains of Kitumbeine and Oldonyo Lengai to the shores of Lake Natron. During camel safaris, about 20 km are covered before lunchtime, after which you can relax and explore the area around the camp.

Bird Walk
Bird watching is an interesting option, with Maasai guides to identify the species found on semi-arid area. The rufous crowned roller, the red and yellow barbet and Ficher’s lovebird are some of the species likely to be spotted.

Climbing Oldonyo Landaree
It takes about 2 hours to reach the summit and an hour and a half to descend. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Mt. Meru and the Maasai plain.

Around Meru Adventure Safari
This includes a walking safari through the natural forests on the slopes of Mt. Meru and a game drive around Momela Lakes. On the first day, leave Arusha and take an afternoon game drive around Momela Lakes. Spend the night at Momela Lodge. Next morning, walk through the natural forests on the slopes of Mt. Meru. In the afternoon, proceed to the Mkuru Camel Camp. The next day, enjoy a camel ride and return late afternoon via the west side of Mt. Meru to Arusha.
