How To Get The Most Out Of Your Tanzania Safari

It’s very difficult to have a bad time on a safari to Tanzania! With stunning scenery, incredible wildlife, characterful accommodations and smiling, friendly local people – what more could you want? But a few tips might change your trip-of-a-lifetime into something truly life-changing. Here our expert, Safari Wanderer gives his advice.

Research before you book

Before you book your safari to Tanzania, do some research. No, you don't need to find out about the feeding habits of the lion or how tall a giraffe can grow (!) What's really important is doing some homework on your tour operator, looking at what trips they offer and finding out about the subtle differences between the many beautiful National Parks. Maybe you want to see the Great Migration during your Tanzanian safari, or maybe you are particularly interested in birdlife. Do some reading, and then discuss your preferences with your chosen tour operator.

Read the reviews

Of course, every operator will tell you that they are the best. But what do their customers say? Nowadays, we have the answer at our fingertips, in the shape of on-line reviews. For a big commitment like this, it really is worth reading them in detail. Look at the comments about specific things, such as the driver-guides, the vehicles, the accommodation. Have a bit of knowledge, thanks to those who've visited before you, before you talk to your operator ... then ask them even more questions.

Absorb the culture, not just the wildlife

If you get the chance to meet some of the local people, take it! Some trips involve a tour of a local village, perhaps meeting with some of the tribesmen, such as the world-famous Maasai warriors with their amazing song and dance. As well as the animals, the delightful Tanzanians themselves can provide you with lifelong memories.

Ask questions of your driver-guide
And when you're out on your Tanzanian safari, ask even more questions! Your driver-guide should be an encyclopaedia, full of knowledge about the wildlife, the country and the culture. Maybe he'll teach you some Swahili. Don't be afraid to ask - these guys are skilled and experienced professionals. Interact with them and your knowledge will improve and your safari to Tanzania will be much, much richer!

Take photos - as many as you can

Most people are never lucky enough to go on safari to Tanzania. Perhaps you'll come back one day, but if not, make sure your camera or phone goes home packed with images to remind you of your experience. And, of course, to share with others who might never manage to come here!

After your safari, consider some downtime

Exhilarating, life-changing ... but it can be exhausting, too. Many tour operators can add a Zanzibar beach holiday on to the end of your safari to Tanzania. To give yourselves some time to recover and reflect, where better than a few days on the sands, by the spectacular waters of the Indian Ocean?
