8 Days, 7 Nights
In eight action-packed days, our safari follows the seasonal migratory movements of the herd animals, while also offering visits to some other true Northern Circuit highlights. Our trip begins at beautiful Lake Manyara, one of our smaller national parks. We make Ndutu our next stop, a great location at this time of the year as it attracts the migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra – as well as their predators. Our epic journey continues to the Central part of the magnificent Serengeti with its endless plains and seemingly endless animals. Last, but certainly not least, we spend time at Ngorongoro Conservation Area with its extraordinary volcanic crater, filled with wildlife.

Tour Briefing
Unless your arrival time yesterday allowed time for your safari briefing, then this will take place after breakfast. We will provide you with all the essential information, before we set off to our first safari destination, the wonderful Lake Manyara National Park, where we will enjoy lunch, take an afternoon game drive and spend the night.
Journey: Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park
Our two-hour (130km) journey takes us westwards from Arusha. Along the route, your eyes will be opened to all the colours and character of Tanzania: perhaps some Maasai herdsmen driving their flocks of goats to new pastures. You’ll get to know your driver-guide, amazed at his depth of knowledge as he effortlessly answers all your questions.
Day’s Highlight
Your game drive in wonderful Lake Manyara, with the Rift Valley escarpment and the lake itself as the wonderful, natural backdrops.
Safari (Game Drive) in Lake Manyara National Park
After our lunch, we jump in our vehicle to cover the highlights of this park. Set against the rugged Rift Valley escarpment, and characterised by its shimmering lake, Manyara is rich in vegetation and the wildlife that thrives here. Enjoy the tranquillity as majestic pink flamingos wade elegantly, picking out a meal of algae from the shallow, alkaline waters. On land, Manyara’s terrain is compact, yet boasts differing environments such as diverse forests fed by waters seeping from the nearby escarpment. Monkeys are abundant, but look out too for the lions, giraffe, warthog and grumpy Cape buffalo who all call this park ‘home’. Hold your nose when we reach the hippo pool, because these big lumps smell!
Surrounded by rich gardens inhabited by a myriad of birdlife, Escarpment Luxury Lodge enjoys spectacular vistas over Lake Manyara, as well as views of Mount Meru and even distant Kilimanjaro. There can be few better ways to finish the day than to sit around the campfire and watch the sun go down! All rooms here benefit from fantastic views of the magnificent surroundings, while inside they are decorated with style and taste and feature all amenities you would expect in a high-quality lodge, including a private balcony. In the main building, guests will find the dining-room, as well as billiards, TV and children’s activity rooms. Before feasting on the excellent cuisine, enjoy a refreshing dip in the lodge pool

Journey: Lake Manyara National Park – Ndutu
With Ndutu as our destination, we leave Lake Manyara, travelling north and west to reach the Ndutu region, which straddles the border between the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Serengeti National Park. Our journey today should take us around 3 hour (150km). On arrival, we take lunch before embarking on our afternoon game-drive.
Day’s Highlight
Your game drive in Ndutu this afternoon will demonstrate the importance of this area with its nitrogen-rich grasses which are much-loved by the animal population. Resident and migratory wildlife are both to be found here during this season.
Safari (Game Drive) in Ndutu
Ndutu is a real hotspot for wildlife during these rainy months.
Wildebeest and their accompanying zebra, often in their tens of thousands, choose Ndutu as part of their Great Migration. It forms an integral part of the annual ritual. And where the herds wander, the predators are never far away, so wildlife viewing here can be dramatic. A fascinating landscape is the setting for our afternoon game drive today. In the distance lie nine dormant volcanoes and one active one. In times gone by, it was the ash that blew in this direction that shaped the soil here. Ndutu itself is located partially in the Serengeti, partially in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As well as resident populations of lion, cheetah and hyena, there are also lesser-spotted wildlife here, so keep your eyes open for aardvark, porcupine and civet cat.
Nestled on the banks of the serene Lake Masek in the southern Serengeti, Lake Masek Tented Lodge offers an intimate and eco-friendly safari experience in a prime wildlife location. This lodge is ideally positioned for witnessing Great Migration when it passes through the Ndutu area, as well as year-round game viewing in this diverse ecosystem. Each spacious tent is elegantly furnished with en suite bathrooms, blending modern comforts with an authentic safari ambiance. The lodge’s commitment to sustainability ensures a minimal environmental footprint without compromising luxury. Guests can enjoy stunning views over the lake, relax in the inviting lounge, or sip a sundowner on the deck while listening to the sounds of the African wilderness. With excellent cuisine and warm hospitality, Lake Masek Tented Lodge provides an unforgettable retreat in the heart of Ndutu.Guests will be delighted with the lodge’s inviting swimming pool, the ideal place to cool off after a day’s safari in the wilderness. Take a drink by the atmospheric campfire before dinner.
Meal Plan
Breakfast will be provided by Escarpment Luxury Lodge. Lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by the lodge for you to take out on safari. Your evening meal will be a full, cooked dinner at the Lake Masek Tented Lodge .
Day’s Highlight
With a full day to explore this diverse area, your driver-guide will have plenty of opportunity to show you some excellent wildlife and explain the fragile, fascinating eco-system of this region.
Full Day Game Drive in Ndutu
Ndutu can be considered in many respects as a continuation of the endless plains of the southern Serengeti. But as it actually lies in part within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, there is the possibility – ground conditions permitting – to go ‘off-road’ which is permissible here. A characteristic feature of this area is the collection of small, salty, lakes, whose water allows wildlife to exist here throughout the year.
Among the most important of the water courses are Lake Masek, which is comparatively deep and thus remains more or less unchanged throughout the year.
Lake Ndutu, nearby, is shallower and varies greatly according to the seasons, fed by a combination of rainfall, springs and rivers. At this time of the year, Ndutu is one of the best places to see migrating herds who seek out the short, nutritious grass and choose this area to give birth. The richness of the vegetation gives them the best chance of survival, but with predators everywhere, survival is by no means guaranteed.
After a full and exciting day of wildlife-spotting in the Ndutu, we will return you to your Ndutu accommodation for dinner and your second night’s stay.
Meal Plan
Breakfast is enjoyed at the Lake Masek Tented Lodge. Lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by the lodge for you to take out on safari. Your dinner will be a delicious meal at the Lake Masek Tented Lodge.
Journey: Ndutu to Central Serengeti
After breakfast, and a final morning game-drive in Ndutu, we set off for our next destination, the Central Serengeti, a journey of around 80km with a journey time of 2-hour. On arrival, we take lunch and have our first game-drive in Central Serengeti.
Day’s Highlight
As you drive, the sheer vastness of the Serengeti plains will overwhelm you – as will the seemingly countless herds of wildlife who cross the landscape on their annual trek.
Safari in Central Serengeti
In the afternoon, after our relatively short drive to the central part of Serengeti, after lunch a game-drive will introduce you to this wildlife ‘hub.
The distinctive rocky outcrops, or kopjes, will soon become familiar to you: don’t ignore these as the animals certainly don’t. Big cats occasionally use these as spots for sunbathing or lookout posts. At the end of your game-drive, you will be taken to your chosen accommodation for some well-earned relaxation and your evening meal.
Nestled in the heart of Central Serengeti, where Tanzania’s iconic wildlife roams freely, the Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge is a luxurious haven for safari enthusiasts. Its prime location provides seamless access to legendary spots such as the Maasai kopjes, Seronera, and the Grumeti River.
The lodge masterfully combines modern African design with authentic charm, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Each spacious tent, perched on raised wooden platforms, boasts en-suite facilities, outdoor showers, and private terraces offering breathtaking views.
Guests can marvel at the Wildlife, sip a drink on their balcony while watching safari unfold, or unwind beneath the starlit sky after an exhilarating day, making Kubu Kubu an ideal base for Serengeti adventures.
Meal Plan
Breakfast will be provided by Lake Masek Tented Lodge. Lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by the lodge for you to take out on safari. Your evening meal will be a full, cooked dinner at the Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge.
Day’s Highlight
Today, we set off from our accommodation in Central Serengeti. Wildlife is abundant here: sometimes you may think it has come to find you, rather than the other way around. Today’s highlight is unknown, as the animals don’t publish their schedule (!) We will be mindful of the migratory movements, of course, but this area is where bushland meets grassland, so a favorite spot for big cats looking for prey. Cheetah, leopard and lions are all possibilities today
Safari in Central Serengeti National Park
Today is a full day of discovery, a chance to enjoy the varied landscapes of the Central Serengeti. The Seronera River weaves its way through the Serengeti, providing waters for all species of wildlife. You will also see the distinctive rocky outcrops, the famous kopjes which characterize the Serengeti landscape. Kopjes are very hard and often granite. They have been aged at maybe 600 million years old and created even before the earth’s surface was pushed up from the ocean.
Lions and other cats frequent these stony places and they are also home to snakes and hyraxes. Slowly weathering in wind and rain, they are peeling off in layers, which you may see on close inspection.Everything here varies with the seasons, but in December migrating herds join the already rich population of resident animals which live here year-round. (In the rainy season, the landscape turns black with hundreds of thousands of wildebeest – a simply incredible sight.)
After your day of thrilling game drives, your driver will return you safely for another relaxing night at your Serengeti accommodation (see above). Drink, relax, dine and sleep, all out in the wilderness of the Serengeti. What could be better?
Meal Plan
Breakfast is enjoyed at the Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge . Lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by the lodge for you to take out on safari. Your dinner will be a delicious meal at the Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge.Note: for those who have booked the Balloon Safari for today, you will be picked up from the lodge at 05.00 hours for a 06.00 hours departure. After your 60 – 90-minute aerial adventure, bush breakfast and champagne, your driver will pick you up for your full-day game drive.
Today our adventure takes us out of the Serengeti National Park and leads us to another of Tanzania’s true wonders, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. With its wildlife-filled crater, Ngorongoro may be difficult to pronounce, but with its wildlife-filled volcanic crater it is easy to admire. Unsurprisingly, this is yet another of our country’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Journey: Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro Conservation Area
After a morning game drive and lunch, this afternoon we will head south-east towards Ngorongoro, a distance of 145km which will take us around 3 ½ hours.
Day’s Highlight
Today, we will get our first sight of the spectacular, incomparable Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and the heart of the Conservation Area of the same name. But before that, we have another morning game drive in amazing Serengeti, marveling at its animal inhabitants. Another day of adventure, another day to enjoy the wildlife.
Safari in Central Serengeti National Park
After our morning game drive, perhaps trying to find any animal that has – until now – been elusive enough to evade your eagle-eyed driver-guide, we head south-east towards Ngorongoro. If it has not already struck you with its vastness, Serengeti’s ‘endless plains’ will certainly now make a deep impression on you as we take the long, straight road which passes Simba Kopjes (famous from ‘The Lion King’) to reach Naabi Hill Gate, close to the divide between Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Here you can gather information at the gate’s visitor center, clamber up the hill for superb views back over the plains, or look out for a colorful agama lizard among the rocks.
The exclusive Sanctuary Ngorongoro Camp is truly an intimate, luxurious stay near the Ngorongoro Crater, home to black rhinos. Just a short drive to the crater floor, the camp features ten luxury safari tents with en-suite bathrooms, indoor bucket showers, and dedicated attendants. The camp’s three communal tents include a dining area, lounge, and bar, all with breathtaking views of the lush highlands and majestic trees. You can kick back with a cool drink from the bar and soak up the camp’s unique atmosphere. The surrounding lands are home to the Maasai peoples, one of Tanzania’s most famous tribes.
Meal Plan
Breakfast will be provided by Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge. Lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by the lodge for you to take out on safari. Your evening meal will be a full, cooked dinner at the Sanctuary Ngorongoro Camp.
Journey: Ngorongoro Crater – Kilimanjaro International Airport
After our morning visit to the incomparable crater – see below – and then lunch, we will have a 5-hour journey, covering the 250km back to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Day’s Highlight
Like nothing else on Earth, the stunning crater of Ngorongoro is a unique home for many, many species of Tanzania’s wildlife. With some luck, you may even see a black rhino here.
Safari in Ngorongoro Crater
From our accommodation, we set off after breakfast, a 6am departure to reach the rim and then descend into the vast crater itself. At one side there’s the Lerai Forest, classic mountain forest landscape with almost tropical characteristics. This is good elephant country, so keep your eyes peeled. By the side of the nearby swampland is what is sometimes called the ‘elephant graveyard’ as the mighty male tuskers at the end of their lives come to chew on the soft, swampland grasses once their teeth have failed them.
The crater has a population of around 120 lions, with well-defined territories; 15,000 wildebeest, 9,000 zebra, 400 hyenas, and around 50 black rhino. Many wildebeest and other herd animals are resident, benefiting from the many sources of year-round waters and are boosted by some migrators in season. Buffalo, Thomson’s gazelle and eland are also present in numbers. Hippos can be found in pools and swampland and highland birdlife is colourful and plentiful around the waters. Flamingos can often be seen in Lake Magadi, which occupies part of the crater floor.
Meal plan
Breakfast is served at Sanctuary Ngorongoro Camp. Lunch will be a nutritious and balanced meal, also provided by the camp for you to take out on safari and enjoyed after your morning game-drive, before we return you to the airport for your flight home. As today is your departure day, please note that dinner tonight is not included in the tour.

Tipping: Tipping is of course discretionary, but is an expected part of the way in which business is done in Tanzania. It counts as an expression of gratitude to those who – hopefully – have made your experience an unforgettable one and enables you to directly reward those people. Our passengers come from all around the world, with different cultural attitudes to tipping, but a tip is of great significance here in Tanzania and will be hugely appreciated by the recipient.
We know that the act of giving of a tip can be a bit awkward and we would suggest that the best way to remove this ‘awkwardness’ is for each couple to put their tip anonymously into an envelope and for the envelopes to be presented by the couple to the staff member. As a guideline, you should consider tipping at the following levels:
Driver guide: $25 US per day, per couple.
For hotels/lodges/tented camps, please do not tip individual staff members, but instead use the ‘Tip Box’, which you should find at the reception of your accommodation. For guidance, you should consider tipping between $5-7 US per day, per guest, at each accommodation.
Balloon Safari: Experience 60 – 90 minute (depending on wind condition) aerial adventure, followed by bush breakfast and champagne.
