Stanley’s Kopje is close to Mikumi National Park, a national park near Morogoro, Tanzania. This is a large park with an area of 3,230 km².
Guests can reach Stanley’s Kopje by air or road. If arriving by air, there is a daily Safari Air Link flight from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. This flight links Mikumi to Ruaha, Mufindi, Selous, and Katavi/Mahale (via Ruaha). If arriving by private vehicle, the journey from Dar es Salaam takes 6 or 7 hours, depending on the traffic. Park fees have to be paid at the Park Gate. You can also take public transport to Mikumi, getting dropped off at the Park Gate (not in Mikumi town!) The camp staff can meet you at the gate, by prior arrangement.
Driving to the Mikumi National Park from Dar es Salaam on a paved road takes about six or seven hours. It is six hours from Dodoma and seven from Tanga.
Mikumi is home to a fantastic concentration of wildlife and is the nearest National Park to Dar es Salaam. It is part of the Selous ecosystem and hosts huge herds of Nyasa Blue Wildebeest (not found in Ruaha National Park), buffalo, giraffes, and zebra. Also prevalent are the predators, such as lions and leopards. African wild dogs are another species of very special resident. Birdlife is fantastic, too – look out for the Zanzibar Red Bishop, among the over 400 species here!
Between June and the end of November is the dry season with high concentrations of wildlife. Stanley’s Kopje is closed from the end of February until the start of June. The national park’s landscape is green and beautiful in the rainy months.
