Nyerere National Park can be accessed by air, with domestic flights operated by Coastal Aviation or Safari Air Link. The flight from Dar es Salaam takes 45 minutes. By road from Dar es Salaam the journey takes around four hours. The road distance varies from 180km to 230 km depending on which gate you choose to access the Nyerere National Park. The nearest airstrips are Mtemere airstrip and Selous River Camp airstrip.
If arriving by air, note that several airlines fly to the Selous, including Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and Safari Air Link. Flights can be booked online. The camp staff will collect you on request from Mtemere, the closest airstrip to Selous River Camp – the journey time is only ten minutes. Flights are only 45 minutes from Dar es Salaam; there are also flights from Zanzibar and other places in Tanzania. A landing fee of $11.80 per person as you land inside the national park. This can be added to your invoice.
Driving from Dar es Salaam to the Selous River Camp, the 230km journey takes 5 to 6 hours.
Selous River Camp closes from March to May each year. The dry season is from June to the end of October/the start of November, and it is during this dry period the wildlife will gather around the diminishing water resources – making them easy to see! So-called ‘short rains’ fall in November and December, and this is springtime in Nyerere. It’s a great time for plants, flowers, insects, and birdlife. This is also the main birthing time, a great time to see baby animals.
Guests can choose between mud huts or a camping option (in safari tents) at the Selous River Camp.
